Speaking at the SXSW conference this week, NBC News President Noah Oppenheim said that they plan to launch the new ad-supported free streaming service in May. Oppenheim also went on to say that the new service would include eight hours of daily news.
“We will be doing original work that will be specific for the streaming service. We will be drawing from the reporting that takes place across all the other NBC News properties,” he said. “We will actually be reaching into other corners of NBCUniversal, E! News, sports, you name it, for some of that content.”
Oppenheim made it clear that this new service is targeting cord cutters. “When breaking news mandates, we’ll go up live as well,” Oppenheim said. “So, for folks who don’t have a traditional cable subscription it will be a great way to access the reporting of NBC News.”
No exact date has been set for when this service will go live, but it is expected in early May.
