NBC News Lays off a ‘Double-Digit’ Number of Employees

NBC News made ‘double-digit’ cuts to its workforce this week joining a growing number of layoffs at media outlets.

A range of 50 to 100 people were expected to be let go out of division’s several thousand employees, sources familiar with the matter told Deadline. The affected employees will receive 60 days’ notice along with a severance package and outplacement services.

Deadline’s sources said the layoffs were part of the company’s plans to focus on areas of priority and further invest in growth opportunities.

This comes as multiple media outlets have been trimming their staff.

Last year, The Washington Post, NPR, Buzzfeed News, and more all chopped their staff. NBC and MSNBC also made another round of double-digit cuts.

The media industry as a whole experienced over 20,000 job cuts in 2023, according to Poynter. The news sector lost 2,681 jobs by early December which more than it did in all of 2022 or 2021, according to Poynter.

Puck News’ Dylan Byers broke the news on Thursday.

NBC wasn’t immediately available for comment.
