The NBA is Working on Deal to Allow In-Market Streaming

nba111Blackouts have been a constant issue for cord cutters who want to watch their local games. Now it looks like for the first time NBC fans of the Clippers will be able to watch the game live without blackouts.

In what is being called an example for other teams’ contracts to come the NBA Clippers team is close to a deal to sell local TV rights of their games while they keep the streaming rights.

The New York Post reports:

Los Angeles Clippers owner Steve Ballmer is weighing a deal with cable channel Prime Ticket that would allow the team to retain streaming rights, The Post has learned.

If the Clippers and Prime Ticket ink the TV rights deal, it would be the first among the four major sports leagues where the team kept streaming rights, sources familiar with the prospective deal said….

Under terms, the Clippers would only be able to offer a streaming service to Prime Ticket customers. The NBA retains out-of-market streaming rights.

The deal is expected to be a road map because many NBA teams’ deals are coming up for renewal over the next few years. Hopefully other sports, such as MLB, take note of what the NBA is doing and use it as an example for future TV deals.
