MoviePass Tops 1 Million Subscribers

MoviePass, the service that lets you see unlimited movies for one low monthly fee, has announced that they recently topped 1 million subscribers.

“We are excited and proud to have reached the one millionth subscriber level in such a short time while still early in the consumer adoption curve,” said Mitch Lowe, MoviePass CEO. “Our focus on creating the best movie theater subscription service experience for our subscribers has propelled our growth to date. We believe that growth will continue as we further develop our application, improve customer service, enhance exhibitor relations and fill movie theater seats for incredible films to be released in the future.”

“MoviePass™ has accumulated more than one million new paying subscribers faster than many of the best known paid subscription services,” said Ted Farnsworth, Chairman and CEO of HMNY. “MoviePass™ has proven to be a significant force in the industry accounting for increased movie theater revenue this year. We know this is what it will take for people to enjoy the experience of movies again and we’re thrilled that movie-goers are embracing a new and exciting era for cinema.”

So how does it work?

Once you sign up for MoviePass they will send you a debit card in two to three weeks that only works at movie theaters. From there you pick what movie you want to see from the MoviePass app and use your MoviePass card to get your tickets at the box office or kiosk.

Now there are a few catches. You can only buy a single ticket a day with each MoviePass debit card and it has to be the day of the movie. So you can’t use it to preorder tickets days out. You also must be within 100 yards of the movie theater when you select the movie you want to see. (Effectively it wants you to be at the movie theater when you get your tickets.)

Not all movie theaters accept the card but over 4,000 theaters around the United States work with MoviePass including several major movie chains such as Regal, AMC, and Cinemark.
