MoviePass May Have Exposed Your Credit Card Information Following a “Security Issue”

Today MoviePass has confirmed that the security lapse was recently discovered and its system was immediately secured. This was first reported by Tech Crunch, which says that tens of thousands of customer card numbers have been exposed because a critical server was not protected with a password.

This comes after on July 4, MoviePass announced that it would be out of commission for several weeks at least in order to fix technical issues and work on a new version of its app. At the time, Moviepass said it had “plans to use this time to recapitalize in order to facilitate a seamless transition and improved subscriber experience once the service continues.” Yet MoviePass is still not accepting new signups as its subscriber numbers have plummeted from 3 million last year to just 225,000 now.

According to TechCrunch the database with credit card numbers on file may have been exposed as early as May leaving hundreds of thousands of credits in the open for anyone to download.

If you are a MoviePass subscriber you should keep a close eye on your Credit Card statements. If you find any strange activity make sure to notify your bank.
