Mindy Kaling: On Why Hulu Is So Much Easier to Work with Than FOX

the-mindy-project-promo-saison1-2jpg-72e2f3_1280w“The Mindy Project” has become a hit show for Hulu after they picked up the show from FOX. Now Mindy Kaling and executive producer Matt Warburton sat down with TV critics to talk about the show and their success after leaving FOX.

“The single best improvement in my life is not working for people who are focused on the number of people who are watching [The Mindy Project],” Kaling said.

Not only is Hulu so uninterested in the exact number of people watching, Hulu does not even tell “The Mindy Project” staff how many people watch them.

It also seems that Hulu is much more hands off with the show allowing them the freedom to do as they wish.

“I’ve found [Hulu’s] notes come from largely a very creative place rather than, ‘We have an [actor that] we have a holding deal with on another show, so can you use them on your show in a way that’s not organic?’” Kaling said. “[broadcast networks like FOX notes are] more business driven.”

This hands off approach seems to be working for Hulu and Netflix as both services have jumped into the world of original content with both feet and subscribers are loving the results.

Both Hulu and FOX face similar issues of creating content that can both entertain and be profitable. Yet their very different approaches seem to show that viewers are willing to embrace a different kind of TV than network executives seem willing to embrace.

Only time will tell but Hulu, Amazon, and Netflix seem to be leading the way to show people how everything should be done.
