Over a Million People Canceled Cable TV in Just 3 Months

Cutting the cable connection to coax connector illustrating people cancelling cable TV serviceIn more bad news for traditional pay-TV owners, in the third quarter 2017 over a million Americans canceled their pay-TV service; however, we are still waiting for two pay-TV services to report, so the numbers could be even worse according to DSLReports.

In their post they say, “Only five of the seven biggest pay-TV providers have released their third-quarter subscriber data, but collectively these companies saw a net loss of 632,000 pay-TV subscribers during the period (385,000 for AT&T and DirecTV, 125,000 for Comcast, 104,000 for Charter, 18,000 for Verizon FiOS TV). When you add in the un-reported numbers from Dish and Altice, that number will be near-as-makes-no-different 1 million.”

These numbers are what many had expected and was predicted by analysts before the start of the third quarter 2017 reporting.

The only saving grace so far for many of these companies is the growth of their live TV streaming services. Both Sling TV and DIRECTV NOW reportedly had strong growth. Overall it was reported that live TV streaming services including Hulu, fuboTV, and PlayStation Vue added about 900,000 subscribers over the same period.

The shift from traditional pay TV to live TV streaming is clearly picking up speed as increasingly Americans seek out less expensive TV viewing options.
