Max Officially Changes Its Name Back to HBO Max

In a move that has sparked both nostalgia and amusement across the entertainment industry, Warner Bros. Discovery announced today that its streaming platform, Max, has officially reverted to its former name, HBO Max. The rebranding, effective immediately, marks a return to the name the service carried when it first launched in May 2020, before its controversial shift to “Max” in 2023. The decision underscores the company’s renewed focus on leveraging the prestige of the HBO brand to drive growth and clarify its identity in a crowded streaming market.

With this news Warner Bros Discovery released a promo video about the change.

The announcement, initially revealed during Warner Bros. Discovery’s earlier this year, was finalized today, with apps bearing the Max name beginning to transition to HBO Max across various platforms. According to company insiders, the update will roll out gradually, with full implementation expected over the next few weeks.

The rebrand reverses a 2023 decision to drop “HBO” from the platform’s name, a move intended to distinguish the streaming service’s broader content library—including Discovery’s reality shows, family-friendly programming, and Warner Bros. films—from the premium, adult-oriented HBO brand. However, the shift to “Max” was met with widespread confusion among consumers and criticism from industry observers, who argued that diluting the HBO name undermined the platform’s association with high-quality programming like The White Lotus, The Last of Us, and Succession. Warner Bros. Discovery’s own data eventually confirmed that subscribers primarily engaged with HBO originals, recent box-office movies, and select documentaries, while much of Discovery’s content went unwatched.

While the app remains the same in functionality, the return to HBO Max signals a course correction for Warner Bros. Discovery, acknowledging that the HBO brand’s cachet is a key driver of its success. Over the coming weeks, subscribers can expect all mentions of Max to transition fully to HBO Max, restoring a name that resonates with prestige and storytelling excellence.
