Now it seems that the US government is ready to make a major investment in the backbone of American broadband.
This week President Trump announced that he will propose a major investment in American broadband as part of a $1 trillion infrastructure investment.
“We must ensure that students have the broadband internet access they need in order to succeed and thrive in this very new and very changed economy, and world,” he told the students.
“That is why I will be including a provision in our $1 trillion infrastructure proposal to promote, foster and enhance broadband access for rural America,” he added.
This seems like it will be one of the few things that everyone can agree with. Recently Democrats have also proposed a $40 billion broadband expansion as part of their infrastructure legislation.
Not only are they working at investing in infrastructure, but the FCC has also been busy. Recently it was announced that the FCC would be creating new rules to make it easier for new broadband wiring, removing hurdles for new ISPs to get access to poles to run their wires.
The FCC is even proposing forcing local governments to quickly respond to requests for permits for new broadband. Currently it can take months just to get an up or down vote in many communities.
Even Dish and AT&T are investing in 5G in a effort to bring high speed internet into rural areas. It seems both are hopping more broadband internet will help their streaming services Sling TV and DIRECTV NOW grow.
Hopefully the combination of new investments and new rules to make it easier to roll out Internet will address the slow Internet speeds many face. We will have to wait and see what passes over the next few months.
