Google appears poised to refresh its Google TV app with a splash of color and user-friendly upgrades, according to an APK teardown of an internal beta build uncovered by Android Authority today. With no public beta available, the dive into the app’s code offers a sneak peek at changes that could soon hit millions of smart TVs and streaming devices Walmart’s Onn devices and Chromecast with Google TV. From a bold new blue interface to a potential “Hot and New Tab” for trending content, these updates signal Google’s ongoing push to polish its TV platform as streaming dominates 43.5% of U.S. viewing (February 2025).
The standout tweak is a visual facelift: Google is swapping the app’s muted dark gray accents for a vibrant blue, mirroring the Google Play Store’s recent redesign. Screenshots from the teardown show this blue popping against a darker background, lending the interface a sleeker, modern vibe. “It’s cleaner, more contemporary,” an Android Authority analyst noted, comparing it to the current gray-heavy UI—think search bars and menus that now feel dated. While not yet live, the shift aligns with Google’s broader design evolution, promising a fresher look for browsing The Office (20 years old today) or The Matrix (26 years).
Functionality’s getting a boost too. The search page may soon list recent queries, sparing users from retyping—a small but practical win for navigating Google TV’s 700,000+ movies and shows. More intriguing is a “Hot and New Tab,” flagged in the code as “HotAndNewFeature__enable_hot_and_new_tab.” This hints at a dedicated spot for trending or fresh releases, though it’s inactive in the beta—suggesting Google’s still tinkering.
These changes, while promising, aren’t guaranteed—APK teardowns predict based on in-progress code, and some features fizzle before launch. No rollout date’s set. The app’s current gray UI, last tweaked in 2022, lags behind competitors like Apple TV’s polish, making this update overdue.
For now, Google’s mum on specifics, but the teardown hints at a more personalized. Google TV’s facelift could land just in time to shine on faster networks—stay tuned for the blue wave.
