Locast is Starting a Competition to Pick the Next City They Will Launch In

Today Locast announced a new competition to help pick the next city that they will launch their free local TV streaming services in. You can visit https://www.locast.org/donate-next-city/ and for each dollar, you donate toward a $250,000 goal Locast will add one vote to your home town.

“Our fans have been AMAZING ” said SFCNY Chairman David Goodfriend. “They’ve helped us grow to unimagined heights this past year. To thank them, we’re letting them pick the next market.”

Locast says it needs $250,000 to launch in the next city as they have to count for things like finding a location to place the antenna and streaming equipment.

“In 2019, we hope to launch Locast.org in many other top-20 markets,” said Goodfriend. “However, our biggest obstacle is funding. This is why we’re asking users to contribute just five dollars per month.” Goodfriend added. “If everyone gave just five dollars each month, Locast would be fully sustainable and could eventually reach all 210 markets.”

Locast also recently announced the launch of a new Roku, Android, Chromecast, and iOS app making it easier to stream your locals. Locast parent company Sports Fans Coalition is a nonprofit that says they have an exception in the FCC rules allowing them to air locals without paying for the service. They are hoping to be protected by Title 17, Chapter 1, section 111 a) 5 of the Copyright Act, a section that allows nonprofits to avoid many of the fees companies would typically pay.

Sports Fans Coalition was created for the purpose of launching Locast and is headed by David Goodfriend. The question now is how will broadcasters react to this new service? One advantage for Sports Fans Coalition is the fact that Goodfriend is no stranger to pushing back against broadcasters and the NFL.
