Local Now Drops PBS Channels From Its Free Service

In a surprising shift for streaming enthusiasts, Local Now, the free, ad-supported streaming service known for its hyper-local content, has quietly removed PBS local channels from its lineup. The decision, confirmed by Local Now representatives last week, marks a significant reversal from the fanfare surrounding PBS’s addition to the platform in early 2024. Meanwhile, Amazon has recently announced that PBS local channels are now available for free on the Amazon Prime Video app, delighting viewers seeking trusted, educational programming.

Local Now, owned by The Weather Channel’s parent company, had celebrated the inclusion of PBS stations as a major coup, offering viewers access to local PBS affiliates alongside its signature mix of news, weather, and lifestyle content. The partnership, which launched with over 100 PBS stations, was touted as a way to bring high-quality, community-driven programming to cord-cutters at no cost. Shows like NOVA, Masterpiece, and local productions resonated with audiences, boosting Local Now’s appeal. However, the recent removal of PBS channels has left users puzzled, with no official explanation beyond vague references to “strategic programming adjustments.”

In contrast, Amazon’s announcement on February 28, 2025, that PBS local channels are now streaming free on Prime Video has been met with enthusiasm. The move, part of a broader deal with PBS, includes 150 local stations and two FAST channels—PBS Drama and PBS Documentaries—available even to non-Prime members under the app’s “Watch for Free” section.

Amazon’s strategic play not only capitalizes on Local Now’s misstep but also enhances Prime Video’s value proposition. Viewers can now access local PBS programming, from children’s shows like Sesame Street to documentaries and cultural series, seamlessly within the Prime Video app. The addition complements Prime’s existing 500+ ad-supported live channels, including thematic ones like PBS Masterpiece, which occasionally sees promotional discounts.
