In a groundbreaking move that could reshape the wireless landscape, four of the nation’s largest independent local broadcasting groups – The E.W. Scripps Company, Gray Media, Nexstar Media Group, Inc., and Sinclair, Inc. – have joined forces to create EdgeBeam Wireless, LLC. Announced ahead of the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, this joint venture aims to leverage the power of the ATSC 3.0 transmission standard to deliver robust wireless data services across a wide range of industries.

EdgeBeam Wireless will capitalize on broadcasters’ existing infrastructure and the advanced capabilities of ATSC 3.0 to provide expansive, reliable, and secure data delivery. This innovative approach has the potential to disrupt existing wireless solutions with its cost-effectiveness and efficiency, particularly for applications requiring real-time data transmission to multiple users.

“This is a game-changer for the broadcast industry,” said Chris Ripley, President and CEO of Sinclair, Inc. “EdgeBeam Wireless unlocks the potential of ATSC 3.0 to deliver nationwide data services on a scale never before imagined, opening up exciting new revenue opportunities and benefiting the entire wireless ecosystem.”

The potential applications for EdgeBeam Wireless are vast and far-reaching, spanning several key sectors:

The reach of EdgeBeam extends beyond these specific applications. With the growing adoption of ATSC 3.0 receivers in devices like cars, drones, marine vessels, and even smartphones and tablets, the potential user base for this technology is enormous.

“The launch of EdgeBeam Wireless marks a significant milestone in the evolution of broadcasting,” said Adam Symson, President and CEO of Scripps. “By harnessing the power of ATSC 3.0, we can not only better serve our local communities but also provide critical data services to a wide range of industries nationwide.”

This collaborative effort creates a spectrum footprint that no single broadcaster could achieve alone, paving the way for truly nationwide coverage. EdgeBeam anticipates partnering with other broadcasters to further expand its capacity and reach, solidifying its position as a major player in the wireless data market.

Beyond commercial applications, EdgeBeam’s national ATSC 3.0 footprint could also provide a crucial backup to existing GPS systems in the event of interference or disruption, enhancing national security and economic stability.

With its innovative technology, broad applications, and potential for nationwide coverage, EdgeBeam Wireless is poised to revolutionize data delivery and usher in a new era of wireless connectivity.
