Thanks to a recent update, certain LG OLED TVs can now display games that support Dolby Vision at up to 4K resolution at 120 frames per second. Of course, we’ve already seen TVs that support the newest HDMI 2.1 standard, which allows for 4K/120 output. What’s notable here is that LG’s C1 and G1 line of OLED TVs can now offer 4K resolution, a 120 frames-per-second refresh rate, and Dolby Vision for gaming all at the same time.
“Firmware version 03.15.27, now rolling out, makes LG’s C1 and G1 series OLED TVs the first in the world capable of supporting incredible Dolby Vision HDR at 4K 120Hz on compatible platforms,” LG said in a press release.
The company added that other 2021 TV models, including the Z1, QNED99, and NanoCell NANO99 series TVs should also receive the update this month. As for other products within LG’s lineup, the press release indicated other 2020 and 2021 TVs are still undergoing testing to see if they can support Dolby Vision gaming at either 60Hz or 120Hz. And there’s no word yet on whether support could come to earlier models.
At the moment, games that support Dolby Vision’s high-dynamic range output are still on the way, with Microsoft, in particular, boasting about enabling the feature on its Xbox Series S and X consoles. Theoretically, gaming support for the HDR standard should offer improved color, contrast, highlights and more.
In any case, if you currently own an LG C1 or G1 OLED, the update should have rolled out by now. And owners of other supported models should keep an eye out for the new firmware sometime this month.
