Nvidia’s latest Shield TV software update looks like it’ll bring some significant upgrades to the streaming device’s AI upscaling feature, alongside more customization options for the current remote control.
We covered the basics of how Nvidia’s AI upscaler works in an article and video earlier this year, but this latest update, version 8.2, broadens support to include content in resolutions as low as 360p. Now it’s unlikely this update will magically transform sub-DVD-quality video into pristine 4K, but it could be a step above a standard upscaler. We’ll have to take a closer look in the near future to make sure, though.
The AI upscaler on 2019-era Shield TV Pros also gets support for 60fps content, which the company says could come in handy for live sports viewing on YouTube.
Elsewhere, the current Shield remote gets some customization options, letting you assign what happens when you double press or long press the menu button. You’ll have more than 25 actions to choose from and the feature also works on the Shield TV remote app. Nvidia says these control updates will work with all Shield TVs, but owners of older models might have to upgrade to the 2019 version of the remote, which retails for about $30 on the company’s site.
As for other additions, here’s what Nvidia says is included in the version 8.2 download:
- Includes Android security patch level June 2020
- Adds SMBv3 support for a faster, more secure connection to SHIELD over a local network
- Restores surround sound audio while casting
- Allows users to grant write access to NAS from installed apps
- Adds ability to convert local HDR video content to SDR displays
- Adds option to disable volume lowering when “OK Google” is detected on a Google Home device
- Restores Bluetooth LDAC support for supported headphones
