Kodi Has a New Plan to Fight Back Against Piracy

The team behind Kodi has for years been struggling with how to address third parties building add-ons offering piracy. Now it has a new plan involving DRM. (Digital Rights Managment.)

Speaking to , XBMC’s Project Lead Martijn Kaijser said blocking these add-ons wasn’t an option, but enticing legal content onto the platform, in part through the use of DRM, could be a solution to changing Kodi’s reputation.

The idea would be that Kodi would enable the use of DRM, allowing providers to offer content on Kodi without worrying about it being pirated. As it would now be locked down on Kodi similar to how other media platforms use DRM.

Ideally this would benefit Kodi users, who would have access to more content, by build a relationship with content providers. Kodi has for years wanted to build a relationship with content providers but the reputation of piracy has pushed them away. The team behind Kodi is hoping that DRM will help address concerns.

Kodi hasn’t committed to its DRM plans just yet and how it plans to implement it. But this news comes right after Amazon announced new plans to block sales of piracy loaded Android boxes running Kodi.

Now the question is would DRM bring more legal options to Kodi users.
