Kodi Is Adding DRM to Attract New Streaming Services

For years the team behind Kodi has pushed to attract streaming services to their platform; however, they have always hit roadblocks because publishers first wanted to know that their content would be secure.

What is DRM? DRM is Digital Rights Management, the software that prevents people from making illegal copies.

According to an interview with TorrentFreak.com many publishers would simply say “no” when they found out there was no DRM. Others would say “contact us if you add DVR to Kodi.”

With Version 18 Alpha 2 release the team behind Kodi has added DRM. In a blog post on their site they say, “These days it’s quite common for content owners and providers to protect their content with encryption. With v18 we added the ability to also play this content as it was actually intended by the DRM system.”

Now just because it has DRM does not mean your non-DRM content will stop working. Kodi is just hoping the addition of DRM will bring in more official streaming add-ons to Kodi.

For years Kodi has tried to distance themselves from the growing trend of third party add-ons that promote piracy. This move won’t prevent these piracy third-party add-ons. All this is meant to do is try and attract new official apps from a long list of streaming services.
