Kanopy Expands to the UK

This week, Kanopy launched its free streaming service in the UK, through a partnership with Southwark Libraries.

Kanopy has been working with libraries across the US, Canada, and Australia since 2008. The on-demand streaming service provides free access to streaming content for those with a library card at a partnering library. Kanopy has over 30,000 film titles available and is available to over 50 million library patrons.

The expansion to the UK makes this a first of its kind partnership by reaching library patrons in the UK and Europe. Southwark Libraries was chosen as the first library system in the area because of its active membership base and the commitment to improving the library system for the community.

“Through this partnership with Southwark Libraries, we’re bringing our strong collection of global films and documentaries to a new audience and market, engaging patrons with their local libraries and encouraging thought-provoking conversations,” said Olivia Humphrey, CEO of Kanopy.

Southwark Libraries includes 12 branches, covering an area with a population of 310,000. With a mission to provide both educational and entertaining content Kanopy will be partnering with educational institutions including University of Cambridge, University of Manchester, and University of Bristol.
