Recentlywe have seen many major streaming services including Disney+ and Hulu raise their prices. This has made many cord cutters reconsider all the streaming services they are paying for.
According to a Wall Street Journal story that TheMessenger sites, more cord cutters are cutting back on the number of services they subscribe to. According to that story, about 25% of subscribers to streaming services have canceled one or more services. At the same time about half of them will reportedly resubscribe within two years.
So are Americans walking away from cord cutting and back to cable TV or are they just looking to save money by rotating services?
Are cord cutters going back to cable TV?
During that same period, millions of Americans canceled cable TV and subscriber numbers dropped. It seems clear that Americans are not heading back to cable TV in large enough numbers to offset the growing losses.
According to a survey of our readers, most cord cutters now subscribe to four or fewer streaming services, and that number is down from a few years ago. In 2020, during the pandemic, the number of streaming services many cord cutters subscribed to skyrocketed to as high as seven services. This was driven by Americans being stuck at home with few entertainment options. Also, Americans had extra money to spend thanks to checks from the government and lower spending on other forms of entertainment.
Now that things are opening back up and the cost of streaming is increasing, many Americans are starting to return to the same number of subscriptions they had before 2020.
What about cable TV?
Cable TV is also seeing prices jump as both DIRECTV and Spectrum raised their TV prices twice in 2023. As these trends continue, we will likely see cable TV continue to become more and more expensive as content owners demand more money.
