IPTV Services Generate Millions in Profit from Piracy

Recently we have seen Hollywood and even the United States government turn their eyes to IPTV. These small illegal streaming services offer access to hundreds of live TV channels for $20 or less a month. Many had wondered why the recent and very harsh crack down on IPTV owners has been happening. As it turns out there are millions of dollars at play here.

Set TV NOW was the first major IPTV provider shut down. According to a court ruling, Set TV was offering illegal access to live TV streams for $20 a month. In the ruling, the Judge said that Set TV had 180,398 subscribers and that they needed to pay $90+ million in damages to DISH. So how much did Set TV make? At $20 a subscriber that works out to over $3.6 million every month, which equals over $43 million every year.

Now the owner of Gears Reloaded, an IPTV service recently raided by the FBI, announced that the FBI has taken over $5 million from him according to a report from TorrentFreak. We are not sure how much he made a month from the IPTV service Gears Reloaded but running the service seems to have been very profitable.

With millions of dollars on the line you can understand why they are starting to draw the attention of Hollywood and governments around the world. Unlike torrenting, which may make the host of the service some money, IPTV services are generating millions in profit every single month.

Many had wondered for how long IPTV services would be tolerated. Now we know the answer as raids and lawsuits have started to become more common in the world of IPTV.
