Hulu is expanding the world of The Handmaid’s Tale with The Testaments, a new series based on Margaret Atwood’s novel of the same name. As reported by Deadline, the sequel is nearing a series greenlight with Chase Infiniti (Presumed Innocent) joining the cast as one of the three leads. Infiniti will star alongside Ann Dowd, who will reprise her Emmy-winning role as Aunt Lydia.
The Testaments takes place more than 15 years after the events of The Handmaid’s Tale, following the intertwined lives of Aunt Lydia, Agnes, and Daisy as they navigate the oppressive regime of Gilead and the growing resistance against it. Bruce Miller, the creator of The Handmaid’s Tale, will return as showrunner for the sequel, with Warren Littlefield continuing as executive producer. Filming is expected to begin at the end of March in Toronto, according to Deadline.
The announcement comes as Hulu prepares to release the sixth and final season of The Handmaid’s Tale, which premieres on April 8, 2025. The series finale promises an intense conclusion to June Osborne’s fight against Gilead, with Elisabeth Moss reprising her role as June. As Littlefield told Deadline, the show’s themes have remained strikingly relevant, saying, “Our thematics only got stronger, sadly, and today, as we discuss plans for The Testaments, it feels like there’s a reason to keep this world alive.”
A New Chapter for The Handmaid’s Tale Universe
The Testaments, which won the Booker Prize in 2019, was quickly picked up by Hulu and MGM Television. As The Handmaid’s Tale wraps up its run, The Testaments is set to carry on its legacy, offering viewers a fresh perspective on Gilead’s harsh realities and the fight for freedom within it. With Bruce Miller at the helm and a cast that includes both returning talent and new faces, the sequel is shaping up to be a compelling continuation of the story that captivated audiences worldwide.
Hulu and MGM Television have yet to officially comment on the project, but with production gearing up, fans of The Handmaid’s Tale have much to look forward to in the near future.
