It had been rumored for some time that this new streaming service would lead to the Criterion Collection’s leaving Hulu. Now we know for sure: on November 11, 2016, Hulu will lose the Criterion Collection.
Criterion released a statement that said, “We’ve had a great five years at Hulu, but the opportunity to build our own channel with the help of the incredible team at TCM is a dream come true for our company. FilmStruck will be the exclusive streaming home of the Criterion Collection as of November 11, when our library will be leaving Hulu. The monthly cost of FilmStruck and the Criterion Channel together will be $10.99, but you can sign up for the FilmStruck newsletter to receive a free two-week trial offer when the services go live.”
The Criterion Collection is hoping that their deal with Turner Classic Movies will help them attract viewers willing to pay $10.99 for access to a huge catalog of classic movies. The question is will they be able to draw a large enough audience willing to pay more than the cost of Netflix to access classic movies?
