Hulu Today Joined the Alliance for Open Media

Today Hulu took a big step in its efforts to promote Internet streaming by joining the Alliance for Open Media, a non-profit organization “working to define and develop the next generation of media formats that are open, royalty-free, and optimized for Internet delivery.”

“As a member of AOMedia, Hulu joins other streaming media industry leaders in pursuit of a common goal – to accelerate development and facilitate friction-free adoption of new media technologies that benefit the streaming media industry and our viewers,” said Tian Lim Hulu’s CTO.

The goal here is to build a new, royalty-free video format that will make streaming online better and lower the cost of streaming services. Not only will it keep costs low for Hulu, the new standards are also designed to be better at compression in an effort to offer more HD and 4K video without using more data, allowing streaming on slower connections and help users with data caps stream more without going over their data caps.

“We are proud to be working together with our industry peers and partners to deliver better quality video more efficiently to more customers,” said Lim.
