Hulu Takes a Break From Production of ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Over Coronavirus

Production on season 4 of Hulu’s Emmy award-winning original The Handmaid’s Tale has come to a halt due to concerns over the coronavirus. The show is just one of the many casualties Hulu is facing due to the global pandemic.

Elisabeth Moss, who was set to star in and make her directing debut with season 4 of the dystopian drama, shared a photo on social media with the announcement. In the photo, red cloaks hang in a soldier-like row beneath the infamous white bonnets worn by the handmaids. The empty room with a single light is eerily foreshadowing of what Hulu studios must look like this week with production shut down.

Hulu is just one of the many streaming services and production companies affected by the global pandemic that is Covid-19. Netflix has suspended production on season 2 of its recent hit original The Witcher, and Apple TV+ is doing the same with its news-themed drama The Morning Show starring Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon.

The Handmaid’s Tale is one of Hulu’s most popular shows. Statistics provided by the streaming service report Season 3 was been watched by 40% more subscribers than Season 2. No doubt Hulu has high hopes for season 4 to continue along with the same growth in viewership, but for now, the cast and crew are nowhere to be found on set.
