It’s been a long time coming, but it looks like Hulu is finally starting to add high-dynamic range video (HDR) support to certain shows and movies within its streaming lineup. The news comes via a recent update on the company’s support pages that adds in mention of HDR support in specific circumstances.

“Users can currently stream select Hulu originals in high-dynamic range (HDR), HDR10, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision on select devices,” the support page states. The update goes on to list the current roster of supported devices that subscribers will need to access HDR-enabled content.

HDR on Hulu is currently supported on:

Users on compatible devices should see an HDR badge within the Details section of a given show or movie whenever a high-dynamic range option is available.

You can see the HDR badge displayed alongside the 5.1 (audio) and 4K (video) badges on the Details page for supported shows and movies in the Hulu app.

The list of currently supported content is relatively limited and includes high-profile Hulu Originals titles. We fired up our Apple TV 4K Second Generation and took a brief tour of the app to see if we could spot content that now supports HDR. Sure enough, popular Hulu titles like The Handmaid’s Tale and Nine Perfect Strangers now offer HDR support. However, other Hulu Originals, like Pen15 or the recent Animaniacs cartoon, haven’t been updated just yet. A user over at AVSForum compiled a handy list of currently supported titles if you’re interested in more HDR fare.

Hulu’s implementation of HDR video clearly trails that of streaming services like Netflix and Disney+, but the video format’s arrival suggests we’ll see even wider support in the future.
