Hulu Says Your Feedback Helped Design the New Live TV Grid Guide

Hulu LogoEarlier this year Hulu finally started to roll out its long-awaited traditional grid guide. A more traditional cable-like grid guide has been one of Hulu subscriber’s most requested features. Now we are finally starting to see this new grid guide roll out to devices like the Roku and Apple TV streaming players.

The man behind this product, Hulu’s Live TV product Manager Charlie Moran sat down and talked about the new look. Here is how Moran describes why they built the new Hulu with Live TV Grid Guide:

We know our users are predominantly coming from the cable world, and although they’re open to new ways of watching TV, what they want and need out of a TV service hasn’t changed.

So, when we launched our first version of the guide last year, we knew we weren’t done yet. That version only told you what was on now and what was up next, but you couldn’t use it to see everything coming up tonight across all your channels, for example. The feedback from users was loud and clear: “We still want a grid!”

In addition to addressing that giant piece of feedback, the most popularly requested way to filter your channel list was to show just your favorite channels, so we also added the My Channels filter to the guide. These changes in the new version of the guide aligned with our overall goal of making the guide incredibly useful to everyone, no matter whether users wanted to see all of the channels or just their favorites.

Moran went on to say while the guide is great, he believes Hulu is set apart from other streaming services because of the sections Hulu has for sports, news, kids, and movies. “These filters don’t use a traditional grid — Instead, they display rows of images, which is an unusual choice. We did this so that, for example, we can show you just the sports games on now, regardless of whether they’re on a “sports” channel or a broadcast network. We liked this layout a lot because it distills what you’re looking for in an intuitive way.” Moran said.

Moran did go on to hint that this is just the start as he ended his Q&A on Hulu’s website by saying: “Breaking out from the grid also lets us pursue innovative features in the future. Stay tuned…”
