Hulu Now Offers 5.1 Surround Sound on Select Devices

Last week Hulu quietly rolled out 5.1 surround sound to their streaming service. With this addition, Hulu is one of only a handful of streaming services that offer 5.1 surround sound.

According to the Hulu 5.1 help page that was added on May 17, 2018, Hulu says that as of today the Xbox One is the only device supporting 5.1. Yet the wording in the help guide refers to devices in several places. This likely means that 5.1 surround sound will be rolling out to more devices at a later date.

To use 5.1 surround sound on your Xbox One, you need to have it turned on in your Xbox Settings. Here is how to do that:

In System > Settings > Display & sound > Audio output:

HDMI audio – Keep this set at Stereo uncompressed unless your HDMI cable is plugged into a receiver that can process 5.1 or 7.1 uncompressed signals or bitstream formats. If your receiver works with these formats, select whichever one best matches your system.

Hopefully, Hulu quickly rolls out 5.1 surround sound to more devices. Roku, Fire TV, and Apple TV all support 5.1 surround sound and with the wording on the help page, I would expect more devices to get 5.1 surround sound soon.
