Hulu Now Has Its First Breakout Original Show

Hulu has long been looking for a breakout original show. It has had several successful original shows, but nothing has been as successful as Netflix original shows. Now Hulu has The Handmaid’s Tale, and it’s right up there with anything Netflix has released.

Netflix has had a long list of breakout titles from House of Cards to Stranger Things . Its list of shows will make you want to subscribe to its service. Hulu, while having several successful shows, has yet to have an original show that people are talking about like they did with Stranger Things.

The Handmaid’s Tale is a Hulu original show based on the 1985 novel by Margaret Atwood with the same name. In the United States it is being aired by Hulu with a new episode every Wednesday, and in Canada the show will be broadcast on Bravo.

The show is set in a dystopian near future when a totalitarian fundamentalist government rules the former United States. Women are subjugated and not allowed to work, control money, or even read. The main character is the Handmaiden played by Elisabeth Moss, and she is assigned to an elite commander and his wife.

Currently there are three episodes available on Hulu, and the remaining seven episodes will be released one a week for the next 7 weeks.

The Handmaid’s Tale has been well received by television critics with a Metacritic score of 92 out of a possible 100 based on 33 reviews. The series also has a 98% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 42 reviews.

The question now is how will Hulu build off the success of its first major original hit.
