Hulu is Expanding Their Anime Lineup With Funimation

This week it was announced that Hulu and Funimation have teamed up to give Hulu first rights to any United States streaming rights for any anime series under Funimation. This means before it will air on Funimation’s streaming service it would be on Hulu if they pick up the rights.

“What this partnership brings us is the highest volume of high-quality anime hits, day and date when they release in Japan,” Lisa Holme, Hulu’s vice president of content acquisition, said. “We had a high degree of confidence in Funimation’s ability to execute — to get the biggest, best, noisiest anime.”

So far Hulu and Funimation have not announced what titles will be apart of this deal. Currently, Funimation owns the rights to 600 anime shows and Hulu has accumulated 400 anime titles from other providers. They could help make Hulu one of the largest sources of anime content in the United States.

Hulu is not alone in building up their anime library. Netflix recently announced that addition of the hit show Evangelion for U.S. streaming in early 2019. Other companies like Crunchyroll has their own streaming services dedicated to nothing but anime.

For anime fans who have struggled for years to find great anime in the United States now have legal access to great anime content.
