Hulu Hires the Man Behind The Walking Dead, Better Call Saul, & More to Lead Hulu’s Originals

Hulu has been working hard to become a leader in original content. Now it has found the man who will lead that charge. Joel Stillerman has been the long-time head of programming at AMC. Now he has accepted the job as Hulu’s first chief of content.

In the newly created position, Stillerman will be responsible for “evolving and driving the overall content strategy for the company, and will oversee Hulu’s content acquisitions, originals development and content partner management teams,” said Hulu. Stillerman will join Hulu’s senior management team this summer and will report directly to CEO Mike Hopkins.

“This year is a transformative year for Hulu—not just in our products, but also our investment in acquired and original content,” said Hopkins. “Over the past several years, we’ve grown our audience and our content offering exponentially, and now is the right time to add Joel’s creative and strategic leadership to the team and drive the next phase of Hulu’s content business.”

Mr. Stillerman, 55, has been the head of programming at AMC since 2008. He was involved with the later seasons of Mad Men and Breaking Bad and then helped the network make the transition to a new era by bringing hits such as The Walking Dead, Better Call Saul, and Into the Badlands to life.

With the breakout success of The Handmaid’s Tale, Hulu is now moving quickly to continue its momentum into original content and growing the service overall with the goal of closing the gap with Netflix and Amazon.
