This holiday weekend, The Matrix saga continues with the fourth installment in the science fiction action franchise, The Matrix Resurrections. Created and directed by the Wachowskis, The Matrix is one of the most influential franchises in the history of cinema, due to its innovative action sequences and use of technology, the first film, The Matrix (1999) was inducted into the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress in 2012.
Lana Wachowski returns as director and co-writer in the newest entry of the series without her sister. Joining Wachowski in the sequel are Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, Lambert Wilson, and Jada Pinkett Smith, who are all resurrecting their roles from previous films. Rounding out the top-billed cast are fresh faces Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jessica Henwick, Jonathan Groff, Neil Patrick Harris, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, and Christina Ricci.
Initially, The Matrix Resurrections was scheduled for release on May 21, 2021, which coincidentally would have premiered alongside another film starring Keanu Reaves, John Wick: Chapter 4. Due to the ongoing pandemic, the date was postponed to April 1, 2022, but was moved up to December 22, which will make it the final Warner Bros. Pictures release to have a simultaneous 30-day release on HBOMax in 2021.
