How to Talk to Your Family About Cord Cutting

Back light profile of hands of 2 friends or couple talking holding coffee cups sitting in a table at home with a window in the backgroundThe holidays are here and will be full of Christmas parties, office parties, family dinners, and other great events. If your family is anything like my family, the topic of cord cutting and how to save money will come up at least once. This is an excellent opportunity to tell your family about cord cutting, but don’t limit yourself to just telling them how you save money. There are so many other extra perks to cord cutting.

Here is a short guide on how to convince others to cancel cable on top of saving money.

Ditch the Ads

Commercials are becoming even more prevalent with some stations speeding up shows to add more commercials. While not every cord cutting option is ad free there are many that are, and the options that have ads have far fewer ads than what you would see with cable TV.

So let them know fewer or no ads means less time watching TV. That also means your kids won’t be demanding the latest toy they saw on TV.

Variety

One of the best reasons to cancel cable TV is the lack of selection. Cable channels want to tell you what you will watch and when you will watch it. When you become a cord cutter you have more selection and control than ever. You pick what shows you want to see and when you want to see them.

So tell your family canceling cable means you get access to more shows and movies than you ever got with cable TV.

Freedom

Cable TV is like a chain that locks you in. Want to watch one season of Game of Thrones on HBO or college football for four months a year? You have to agree to a two-year contract.

Once you ditch cable TV you are free. Services such as Sling TV, Netflix, and Hulu all allow month-to-month options. No need to agree to pay cable TV for a year if you just want to watch one season of a show.

You Can Still Watch Your Favorite Shows, Sports, & Channels

This is still the biggest concern for many and an understandable one. We all want to save money but still want to watch our shows.

The good news is with the growing list of live TV services such as Sling TV, PlayStation Vue, Hulu, DIRECTV NOW, and fuboTV you can still watch your shows.

My suggestion is to encourage them to take advantage of all the free trials out there to find the service that is right for them.

Conclusion

Everyone is different, but don’t fall into the trap of saying cord cutting is just about saving money. Cord cutting offers so much more than just saving a lot of money every year.
