Recently this fear of the Roku player getting hacked has once again popped up, but the good news is Roku gives you the ability to lock down your Roku. This means apps like the Roku app will no longer be able to connect to your Roku player or Roku TV.
It is important to remember that for this so-called hack to happen the people trying to control your Roku need to also be on the same Wi-Fi network. You can easily prevent these kind of hacks by having a strong Wi-Fi password. So, make sure your Wi-Fi password is not easily guessable.
How to Keep Third-Party Apps from Hacking Your Roku
You can turn off the ability for third-party apps to access your Roku player by going to Settings>System>Advanced System Settings>External Control>Disabled. Or if you would like to allow third-party apps like the Roku app to control your Roku but want additional control you can do that now.
Roku offers a third option. Now you can allow it but have a message pop up on your Roku when someone tries to access this feature. There you will be able to allow or disable this new feature.
