How the Rise of Disney+ Has Affected the Global Streaming Market

Ever since Disney+ exploded onto the streaming landscape, it’s been pulling market share away from other services. Disney+ has seen rapid initial growth while Netflix, Prime Video, and other services have been declining overall.

This timeline provided by JustWatch depicts the global SVOD market shares including Disney+ as it became available in countries throughout the world. As you can see, Netflix held around 40% market share when Disney+ launched, but has since fallen closer to 30% over time. Disney+ on the other hand has steadily risen from baseline to near 20% market share.

Granted, this pull away from big streamers hasn’t just been fueled by Disney+. Apple TV+, HBO Max, and Peacock have all launched in the past 1-2 years, creating more competition from OG streamers like Netflix, Prime Video, and Hulu. But over all, Disney+ has been the fastest growing streaming service in 58 of the 64 markets where it’s active.

HBO Max has been the fastest-growing service in the U.S.
