HBO Max Saw 90,000 Downloads on Day One

HBO Max launched Wednesday morning and Sensor Tower is now reporting that the app was downloaded by nearly 90,000 users through the App Store and Google Play on the first day.

When compared to Disney+ which saw 4 million downloads on its first day, or Quibi with 300,000 downloads, that number may seem small. However, Sensor Tower points out that the number doesn’t include those who got instant access to HBO Max through their current HBO Now subscription, or those who are using HBO Max through platforms like Hulu or YouTube TV. The number is also leaving out those who downloaded the app before launch day in order to get a $3 per month discount through a WarnerMedia promotion.

“This is a unique platform in many ways, including the way it is distributed,” Chief Executive Officer of WarnerMedia Jason Kilar told Bloomberg in a statement about how the streaming service did on launch day. “I’ve seen this movie before and am so excited as we begin down this path engaging viewers globally with our unmatched shows and rich library.”
