HBO Max, Quibi Won’t Change Launch Dates for Coronavirus

Chrissy's CourtWhile many streaming services and studios are opting to release series and movies early in an effort to reach a large audience of families that are now stuck at home, HBO Max and Quibi say they won’t be changing their plans.

“Our plans for the app launch have not changed. The Quibi app will launch on April 6,” a Quibi spokesperson told Next TV Wednesday morning.

A source also commented that Warner Media is also on track to stick to its original launch date for HBO Max, saying “all systems are still go to launch in late May.” The source also noted that plans were subject to change.

Peacock has yet to comment on its current launch date of April 15.

Nielsen recently released a study showing that media usage will rise up to 60% as people are instructed to stay home in a crisis. “Be it snowstorms, hurricanes or a global pandemic, media users ramp up their media consumption to stay informed, kill time, find solace and stay in touch with others,” Nielsen said in the report.

While Quibi seems set on an April 6 launch date, it won’t be surprising to see Peacock or HBO Max shift plans and move up their dates if more cities across the country enact a more restrictive shelter-in-place rule.
