HBO Max is Removing CNN Max the Live Feed of CNN Programming & Most On-Demand CNN Content

HBO Max has announced the discontinuation of CNN Max, its live feed of CNN programming on November 17 2025, marking a significant shift in its streaming offerings. The decision, effective immediately, ends the availability of live CNN broadcasts for HBO Max subscribers. While the platform will no longer provide real-time access to CNN’s live news coverage, select CNN original series and documentaries will remain accessible on-demand. This change reflects HBO Max’s evolving content strategy as it refocuses its streaming priorities.

This all comes as Warner Bros. Discovery is working to spin off its cable networks form its main company. In 2026 its cable networks will no longer be apart of the same company that owns HBO Max. It also comes as CNN will be launching its own streaming service this fall.

“CNN has benefitted tremendously from its two years of offering a live 24/7 feed of news to HBO Max customers. We learned from HBO Max’s large base of subscribers what people want and enjoy the most from CNN, and with the launch of our own new streaming subscription offering coming later this fall, we look forward to building off that and growing our audience with this unique, new offering.” Said CNN’s Executive Vice President of Digital Products and Services, Alex MacCallum.

CNN Max, launched as a distinct feed separate from the traditional CNN cable television network, was designed to deliver live and repeat broadcasts of CNN’s programming, including breaking news, talk shows, and special reports. The service allowed HBO Max subscribers to stay updated with real-time news alongside the platform’s extensive library of entertainment content. However, with the removal of CNN Max, the bulk of CNN’s on-demand programming, including many of its news-oriented shows, will also be phased out from the platform. Only a curated selection of CNN’s original content, such as documentaries and select series, will continue to be offered to subscribers.

The decision to eliminate CNN Max comes amid broader changes in the streaming industry, where platforms are increasingly reevaluating their content portfolios to align with viewer preferences and financial goals. HBO Max, known for its robust catalog of films, scripted series, and exclusive originals, appears to be streamlining its offerings to focus on entertainment rather than live news. The move may also reflect challenges in maintaining the operational and licensing costs associated with streaming live news content, which requires constant updates and infrastructure to support real-time broadcasts.

For subscribers accustomed to accessing CNN’s live coverage through HBO Max, the change may disrupt their viewing habits, particularly for those who relied on the platform for breaking news and current events. The remaining on-demand CNN originals will provide some continuity, but the absence of live programming represents a significant reduction in news content on the platform. HBO Max has not indicated whether it plans to replace CNN Max with alternative news offerings or partnerships in the future.

As the streaming landscape continues to evolve, HBO Max’s decision underscores the challenges of balancing diverse content types within a single platform. Subscribers will now need to seek live CNN programming through other avenues, such as the cable network or CNN’s own digital platforms, while HBO Max refocuses on its core strengths in scripted and on-demand content.
