It looks like HBO found a real winner with its streaming service HBO Max. The platform launched one year ago on May 27, 2020, at the height of a global pandemic, but has managed to become a household name in just a short time.

The streamer exceeded initial forecasts adding 11.1 million HBO/HBO Max subscribers over the past year to surpass 44 million in the US as of the end of Q1. Subscriber additions were boosted by same-day movie premieres for titles including “Wonder Woman 1984” and “Godzilla vs. Kong” along with the release of “Zack Snyder’s Justice League.”

In addition, the service has a highly successful user approval rating with 95% of customers saying they’re satisfied with their HBO Max subscription. The platform has also seen a 70% increase in audience engagement compared to HBO GO or HBO Now.

HBO Max users also know what they want to watch – the average amount of time it takes for a viewer to decide on what to watch is just 100 seconds. HBO Max attributes that to the quality of titles available on the streaming service.

Some of the most popular Originals on the show include Euphoria, The Flight Attendant, Game of Thrones and more, while popular spotlight pages include “Blockbuster Franchises,” “Harry Potter,” and “Warner Bros Same Day Premieres.”

Speaking of WB premieres, Birds of Prey: Harley Quinn, Godzilla vs. Kong, Wonder Woman 1984, The Little Things and more made the streamer’s top list of popular theatricals.

HBO Max continues to evolve as it recently announced the launch of an ad-supported tier coming the first week of June at a cost of $9.99 per month. This year, WarnerMedia also plans to expand HBO Max to 60 international markets. The expansion will start with 39 territories in Latin America and the Caribbean in June and 21 territories in Europe later in 2021.
