HBO Max is Currently #1 in the Apple App Store

Just a week after launch and the HBO Max streaming app is currently sitting in the number one spot on the Apple app store according to a research company called App Annie. If this is any indication of HBO’s subscriber count, offhand it looks like the beginning of a successful story.

However, according to Sensor Tower, HBO Max only had 87,000 new users download the app across Apple and Google Play on the first day of launch. Compared to a mega powerhouse like Disney who pulled in an astonishing 10 million signups in one day, the HBO numbers sound minuscule. And while it may be unfair to compare the two like apples to oranges, it goes to show the difference in audience adoption.

Even the struggling Quibi app managed to acquire 300,000 app installs its first day. Quibi has been in the news recently for the lack of enthusiasm it’s generated since launch, citing discouraging stats like losing two-thirds of its users before the free trial is even over.

Another diminishing reality is that the HBO Max app technically isn’t even a new app on the market. The HBO Now app was integrated into the HBO Max. Sensor Tower reported the old app had about 16,000 new installs every day, so taking the 87,000 it saw the day it converted to HBO Max means only about 71,000 more installs than usual.

We’ll see how long the HBO Max app can hold onto its chart-topping spot in the app store.
