HBO Max has a ‘Harry Potter’ Series in Early Development

A live-action Harry Potter TV series is reportedly in the works at HBO Max. However, the series is in the very early stages with no actors, directors, or even writers confirmed yet. The Hollywood Reporter first broke the news that WarnerBros is in talks with writers to come up with a potential storyline for the series.

While continuing to developing on Harry Potter content is a top priority for WarnerBros, they’ve told the Hollywood Reporter “There are no Harry Potter series in development at the studio or on the streaming platform.” While that statement may be true, sources say WarnerMedia has been in multiple conversations about finding pitches and writers.

There’s no telling whether the series would take place in the same timeline as JK Rowling’s seven books detailing the Boy Who Lived and his time at Hogwarts, or if they would be a prequel or sequel to the storyline.

Tapping into a Harry Potter would be an obvious financial move for the streamer given the franchise’s huge following. Warner Bros. grossed more than $7 billion worldwide on the eight films adapted from Rowling’s seven books, and has also debuted the prequel series Fantastic Beasts.
