HBO Max and Disney+ Saw Major Increased App Downloads Christmas Weekend

Thanks to the premiere of “Wonder Woman 1984,” HBO Max broke its record for mobile app downloads in a single day. Apptopia reports that an estimated 554,000 users signed up for the HBO Max app between Friday and Sunday, with the film debuting at noon ET on Friday.

HBO Max says that nearly half of the platform’s subscribers watched the film on the day it was released. Total viewing hours on the app on Friday were more than triple that of a typical day in the previous month.

“Wonder Woman 1984 broke records and exceeded our expectations across all of our key viewing and subscriber metrics in its first 24 hours on the service, and the interest and momentum we’re seeing indicates this will likely continue well beyond the weekend,” said Andy Forssell, Executive Vice President and General Manager, WarnerMedia Direct-to-Consumer. “During these very difficult times, it was nice to give families the option of enjoying this uplifting film at home, where theater viewing wasn’t an option.”

In fact, the film performed so well that Warner Bros. Chairman Toby Emmerich announced that the company will fast track a third installment of the franchise.

Disney+ also saw a surge between December 25-27. Sensor Tower reports that the Disney+ mobile app had 2.3 million downloads globally. “Soul” was released on Disney+ on Christmas Day.
