HBO is About to Do a Major Overhaul of HBO Now

siliconvalley04__140421184546It was reported this week that HBO is looking hard at redoing their digital offerings including HBO Now.

At the core of this new look is HBO’s contract with BAMTech, which is now partially owned by Disney. BAMTech is the backend that runs HBO Now and HBO Go. It is the core of what HBO Now is and if reports are right HBO is looking at ending its contract with BAMTech.

Yesterday the NY Post reported that HBO is working on building a whole new digital service that would no longer use BAMTech as the backend of HBO Now and HBO Go. From talking with sources close to the project we are hearing HBO is planning on building brand-new HBO Now and HBO GO apps, from top to bottom new user interface, and a new streaming backend.

Currently HBO has a deal with BAMTech until the end of next year, but HBO could easily void that contract or keep paying on it even if it does not use it.

What we do know is that HBO is clearly looking at a total overhaul of HBO Now. Hopefully this is just the first step in an even better cord cutting service.
