Half of Americans Stream Content from YouTube, Netflix, etc Daily

Women Using LaptopAround 50% of households in the US with internet access stream video content daily, according to data from Leicthman Research Group. That number is up from 29% in 2014 and just 16% in 2009.

“This year’s study demonstrates a growing reliance on broadband Internet services in the home, with an increase in the time spent online at home, including the frequency of watching Internet-delivered video,” said Bruce Leichtman, president and principal analyst for Leichtman Research Group in a press release.

Along with an increase in households streaming is an overall increase in internet use. For US households, the time spent on the internet each day has reached 3.7 hours, an increase from 2.8 hours in 2014 and 2.2 hours in 2009.

Many of those who aren’t watching at home are streaming video on the go. 50% of those who aren’t online at home are accessing the internet on a mobile phone.

“It is most common for home Internet service to be complemented by Internet service on a mobile phone.  Three-quarters of households now get Internet service both at home and on a mobile phone, while the segment opting to solely access the Internet on a mobile phone has plateaued,” Leichtman said.

With the growth of online streaming, you can see why many Americans have decided to drop cable TV in favor of an all-online option. How often do you stream video? Leave us a comment and let us know.
