Netflix announced Monday that Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein has both a theatrical release date and a streaming release date.
In a rare move from the streamer, the film, starring Oscar Isaac, Jacob Elordi, Mia Goth, and Christoph Waltz will begin with a short run in select theaters on October 17 and will start streaming on Netflix on November 7. The director’s last film for Netflix, Pinocchio, also had a limited theatrical run before streaming and won an Oscar for Best Animated Feature in 2023.
In the new film, director Guillermo del Toro adapts Mary Shelley’s classic story of “a brilliant but egotistical scientist who brings a creature to life in a monstrous experiment that ultimately leads to the undoing of both the creator and his tragic creation.”
The project has been a lifelong dream for del Toro.
“This has been, for me, the culmination of a journey that has occupied most of my life,” del Toro said during Netflix’s Tudum 2025: The Live Event. “I first read Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein as a kid and saw Boris Karloff in, what became for me, an almost religious state. Monsters have become my personal belief system.”
