Grandfathered YouTube TV Subscribers Will See a Price Hike in May

Today YouTube TV announced that they are adding Discovery Channel, HGTV, Food Network, TLC, Investigation Discovery, Animal Planet, Travel Channel, and MotorTrend. YouTube also announced that the OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network will be added later this year. In addition, EPIX is now available for an additional charge.

The bad news is the price is going up to $49.99 a month on YouTube TV and $54.99 if you pay through Apple. This new price takes effect today, April 10, for new members. Existing subscribers will see these changes reflected in their subsequent billing cycle after May 13.

Many of our readers asked if grandfathered YouTube TV subscribers who are currently paying $35 a month will see a price hike. We reached out to Google who confirmed that ALL YouTube TV subscribers will see their bills go up to $49.99 on their next bill after May 13th, 2019.

“In keeping with our goal of giving you the content you want—when you want it—YouTube TV now includes 70+ networks, 6 accounts per household (each with its own unique recommendations and cloud DVR with no storage space limits), and 3 concurrent streams. It’s all included in the base cost of YouTube TV. We also provide complete local affiliate coverage, with local feeds from all of the four largest broadcasters in over 90% of the markets where YouTube TV is available, and three of four stations in all the rest. And you can watch YouTube TV on any screen—mobile devices, tablets, computers and TVs. We will continue to expand the list of supported devices.” YouTube said on their site.

With the average cable TV bill at $107 a month just for TV, YouTube TV seems to be hoping that by offering 70+ networks for just $50 will work. Sadly that is no comfort to subscribers about to see their bill going up.
