Google is Working On a Live TV Service to Take on Sling TV

Google has long been rumored to be working on a live TV service. Now we know that Google has reached an agreement with CBS Corp. to carry the broadcast network on its soon-to-be-launched TV service, people familiar with the matter told the WSJ.

This deal will give Google’s YouTube platform access to CBS content and is likely to debut in early 2017. It is also rumored that Google is also near a deal to distribute channels owned by 21st Century Fox and is close to a deal with Walt Disney Co. as well.

The service is rumored to be called Unplugged and will be aimed as a low-cost option targeting consumers who either have resisted subscribing to traditional pay-TV or cut the cord due to rising costs.

The Unplugged service from Google will be priced in the range of $25 to $40 a month, according to media executives who have heard the pitch.

The new offering is likely to be separate service from YouTube Red, the ad-free subscription offering the company launched last year. Though it is rumored that YouTube Red original content will be included as part of the skinny TV bundle, one of the people familiar with the matter said.
