Google TV’s Android App Update Includes More Streaming Services & Improved Recommendations

Last week, Android TV got an update that borrowed some Google TV features including improved recommendations, immersive detail pages, and a new watchlist. Now, the Google TV app for Android is getting an update.

The Google TV app, formerly known as Google Play Movies & TV, will see an updated user interface and, like the Android TV update, improved recommendations. The recommendations will now offer more rows of suggested titles, based on what you’ve already watched, your personal interests, and what’s popular in your area. If you’ve already seen a show or movie, you’ll now be able to select “watched” to help improve recommendations. The app will also now display Rotton Tomatoes scores on show and movie posters to help you decide if a title is worth the watch.

Along with the new features, the app will now be able to search more services for content, including Discovery+, Viki, Cartoon Network, PBS kids, and Boomerang, as well as on-demand content from YouTube TV, Philo, and fuboTV. The app previously did not include content from these services in its search and discovery tools. Users can click on their account icon to add the services they subscribe to in the “Manage Services” menu.

The new features will begin rolling out on the Google TV Android app in the U.S. this week.
