Google Play Movies & TV App Is Shutting Down in October On Android, Google TV, iOS, & More

Google Play

Google will shut down its Google Play Movies & TV App on October 5. Instead, you will find your active rentals and existing purchases on the Shop tab in Android TV, Google TV, Android, and iOS.

The removal comes as Google is moving its movie rentals into the new store that is built into each platform. The company is looking to push a more integrated experience on its each platform, rather than a standalone store.

Google Play Movies & TV originally launched in 2011 as a way to buy or rent movies and TV shows and store them in your Google digital library. The service saw usage with the rise of Android and YouTube, since the accounts were linked, but its features and reach have retreated over the last few years. In 2011, Google Play Movies & TV stopped supporting smart TV platforms like Roku.

The death of the app was a matter of timing, with the Shop tab showing up in previews as early as June.

Customers who need help accessing their content can visit the Google TV Help Center or YouTube Help Center.

A spokesman for Google wasn’t immediately available to comment on the shutdown.
