Google Play Could Soon Be Adding Free, Ad-Supported Content

Recent rumors suggest Google may soon be entering the free, ad-supported content market through its Google Play Movies app. XDA and 9to5 Google are both reporting on code discovered within the Android app that suggests ad-supported movies may be on the way, though the exact timing of a release remains unclear.

The code mentions “hundreds of movies (with) just a few ads.” It also suggests users would have to enter a birthdate, potentially to keep more mature-rated content away from children. 9to5 Google also predicts the new feature could be an extension of Google’s free movie content on YouTube movies.

Currently, free, ad-supported movies via the Google Play Movies & TV app remains a rumor, but we’ll certainly keep an eye out for any official announcements from Google. With the ongoing call for people to stay in their home, having more options, including free, ad-supported options, could come in very handy indeed.
