Google just announced a new offer for its Stadia game streaming service that includes two free months of Stadia Pro access. The company, like many we’ve covered over the past few weeks, cites the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the need for entertainment options while many of us stay at home.
“We’re facing some of the most challenging times in recent memory. Keeping social distance is vital, but staying home for long periods can be difficult and feel isolating,” Phil Harrison, Google Stadia’s vice president and general manager, said in a blog post announcing the move. “Video games can be a valuable way to socialize with friends and family when you’re stuck at home.”
For those unfamiliar, Stadia offers access to a collection of video games streamed to your home instead of loading them up on a console or home PC. Players can access games via a web browser, Android or iOS mobile device, and on your TVs via Chromecast Ultra. In its announcement, Google said those signing up for the offer will get instant access to nine games, including Destiny 2: The Collection, Thumper, and GRID. More can be purchased via Stadia’s store and you can keep those games if you cancel your subscription.
Normally, Stadia Pro costs $9.99 per month, and Google noted that existing customers won’t be charged for two months, in step with the free trial offer.
Beyond that, Google says it’s working on temporarily setting default screen resolution to 1080p instead of the usual 4K. This move is intended to ease congestion and reduce network load, and mirrors similar tweaks Netflix, Sony, and others have made recently. Still, the company says you can adjust your data usage options via the Stadia app.
